Jose Hess was one of the first designers to recognize that design-driven jewelry was the future of the American fine jewelry industry. To honor Jose’s legacy and encourage today’s visionaries, the Jose Hess Design Awards non-profit 501(c)3 has been established to continue the mission and focus on emerging talent.

Through a Design Challenge, we invite designers to create original pieces of fine jewelry inspired by a theme we introduce. Judging will occur, and winners will be revealed, providing a platform for emerging talent to showcase their creativity and innovation.

Jose Hess remains an esteemed figure in American jewelry design, celebrated for his pioneering and distinctive creations that have indelibly shaped the industry. Nurturing his passion from a young age, Hess honed his craft through apprenticeships with revered master jewelers, crafting an extensive portfolio over a career spanning more than five decades. His designs, spanning from refined everyday adornments to striking statement pieces, seamlessly blend classical sophistication with contemporary flair, often featuring bold geometric forms, sleek lines, and meticulous integration of precious metals and gemstones. Hess's artistic brilliance garnered widespread acclaim and garnered numerous awards.
Throughout his professional journey, Hess accumulated accolades from prestigious institutions such as DeBeers Diamonds, the American Gem Trade Association, and the Japan Jewelry Designers Association. Notably, he assumed pivotal leadership roles as president within prominent industry organizations, including The Manufacturing Jewelers & Suppliers of America and as the First American President of the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO), underscoring his global influence and leadership. As a founding member of the American Jewelry Design Council, Hess played a crucial role in shaping the trajectory of contemporary jewelry design. Additionally, he generously imparted his expertise as an esteemed instructor at New York's Fashion Institute of Technology, solidifying his commitment to nurturing talent.
